Joseph Cooper, MD

Dr. Joseph Cooper attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for his undergraduate degree with a dual major in Biology and Philosophy. He graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine and went on to complete his Internal Medicine residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He remained at Geisinger for an additional year as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine with a focus on teaching and the education of trainees. He completed his Infectious Diseases fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center-Albert Einstein College of Medicine in The Bronx, New York. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Cooper began working at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center primarily in the PACE (Partners in AIDS Care and Education) and Infectious Diseases Clinics in July 2019. He has an active outreach HIV clinic at Valley Health Center in Gilroy, California. He sees outpatients with general infectious diseases and provides inpatient consultation at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. He is actively involved in the teaching and training of Stanford University Infectious Diseases fellows, internal medicine residents from his home institution as well as Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara. Dr. Cooper holds an appointment of Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated) at Stanford University School of Medicine as of September 2020.

Dr. Cooper is an active member of many Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases professional organizations and volunteers his time serving on workgroups surrounding education and training the next generation of physicians within these organizations. He has many publications in peer-reviewed journals on his professional interests which include HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, substance use, emerging infectious diseases and serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for a variety of journals and within these professional organizations.

Dr. Cooper lives with his wife (an Obstetrician and member of Valley Physicians Group) and two daughters in San Jose. Outside of medicine and work, you can find him spending time with his family, hiking and exploring the Bay Area and beyond, listening to all types of music, gardening, photography, cooking new recipes, exercising and playing sports.
